Congratulations, you’re pregnant!! Now what?

I have a few friends who are pregnant with their first baby, and they have been asking me all kinds of questions about anything and everything that has to do with pregnancy.  So I’ve decided to jot this down…who knows, it might be useful to you or it might just be “funny read”.

I have been pregnant 3 times with each time a beautiful and healthy baby as a result.  You might hate me for this, but I’m one of those women who loved to be pregnant and no epidural for 2 out of 3 births (my husband called me a lovely term “the bull”).

When I was pregnant with our first child, Tyler,  I was sick the first 3 months.  I had terrible migranes, certain scent would make me nauseous, but it lasted only 3 months…thank goodness!!  After that, it was just great!!  I ate everything in sight!! I had cravings for Big Macs almost every day and night, to the chagrin of my husband.  Who’s pregnant here?!!  I ate and I ate until I gained 44 lbs.  My brother called me the “linebacker”!

During that first pregnancy, I had lots of questions about pregnancy and the one book that was at my bedside table was “What to expect when you’re expecting” by Heidi Murkoff.  If I had a question in the middle of the night and not sure who to ask, I would find it in that book.  I called it my pregnancy Bible.

But there are some things that my Mom (a mother of 5 and from the old country) taught me that I couldn’t find in the book and they are as follow.  These tips are not scientific by any mean but I truly believe that they have some significance to them.

  • No matter how hard the pregnancy is, BE HAPPY…you will have happier babies.  And my Sophia is a testament to this “myth”.
  • Stay away from shellfish, your baby might get really bad rashes when he/she is born.
  • Be light on your feet.  This means that when you walk…don’t walk too fast or have heavy footsteps.  And running and doing sports are out of the question (according to my Mom, this is to prevent early deliveries or bed rest)
  • Don’t reach too high.  (I don’t know what’s the reason behind this…but my Mom’s adamant that I didn’t do this when I was pregnant).
  • Drink lots of water and milk…your baby will have nice skin.
  • These fruits are good for pregnancies and your unborn babies: coconut juice, papaya, oranges, bananas, apples, and sugar canes, just to name a few.
  • Stay away from lychees, pineapples, and grapes, again just to name a few.

I wish you an easy, quick birth and a healthy baby!!
