Nurses shortage in Massachusetts.

I was watching the news last night and this was startling news.  The report says that nurses shortage are on the rise, and by 2010, there will be 9000 nurses less than what we have now.

The report also said that there are more baby boomer nurses and they will be retiring soon.  And some of the remaining nurses are leaving the profession altogether, claiming that they are overworked and underpaid.

At some hospitals, the ratio is 10 patients to 1 nurse, and the nurses’ union wants 4 patients per nurse.  They claim that by having too many patients in their care, the patients will not get the best care and in some cases, it can jeopardize their well being.

And I could not have agreed more with the nurses’ claims!  For the past three births at the same hospital, we have met the most wonderful, caring and hard working nurses at the labor and delivering swing.

If you have ever been to the labor and delivering room, you know how hard the nurses worked.  They were your coach (if your husband faints at the sight of blood, *rolling eyes*), they were your cheerleader (if your husband was too tired from staying up with you the night before *more eye rolling*), and not only that they did all the “grunt” work.

I always wondered why we needed the delivering Doctors at all.  They would come in the last possible minute when the baby is about to come out to catch him/her, *head scratching*.

Well, alright…maybe the doctors have to attend more schooling and they might have to do some minor surgeries if required after birth.  But I think nurses still deserved more pay for what they do, don’t you think?

I hope that the hospitals, the healthcare industry and the government will wake up and realize that we have a crisis on our hand.  We need to recognize the nurses for all their hard work and contribution to our babies’ and our own well being.

Thank you to all the nurses who have helped me in delivering three beautiful, and healthy babies!!

I totally agree with you ! One of my friends used to be a nurse . She decided to quit the job 8 years ago because of the low paid salary and the working hours against family schedule.
