School vacations…ugh!!
If you have school age children, school vacations can either be a nuisance, a chore, or a bore (oh, was I thinking out loud?!)…I meant to say a blissful time!
And if you are not one of the lucky travellers going somewhere fun…trying to come up with games or just something to keep the kids occupied…ALL THE TIME can be taxing!! *sigh*
It gets even harder if you have rules in your house like we do (why do I subject myself to this?). The kids can only watch TV during the weekends. Forget about Gameboys, or XBox…Santa still hasn’t found our house on the map yet, thank goodness!!
But realistically, as long as I still have some control over how they are raised…I would prefer them to use their imagination when playing rather than glued to the TV 24/7. Their choice of becoming couch potatoes will come soon enough, but not under my watch (you go girl!)!
Do you remember what you did when you were five? We didn’t have any computer games to play with. There were only 5 channels available to watch and it was in black and white (and no, I wasn’t born in the 50’s). We invented games to play with each other. Whatever happened to using the old “noggin”?Â
Do you find yourself saying to your children…”when I was your age, we didn’t have any video games or electronic toys that require batteries to play with!” We played “pretend” alot, and the kids would stare at you like you had two heads.
My husband would tell or should I say “remind” them that when he was five or six, he would play under a chair for hours and pretended to be…Captain Kirk and he was flying the ship “Enterprise”! (my oh my, I married a geek and a Trekkie!)
That reminded me of this one skit on Saturday Night Live, where the old man was telling his children/or grandchildren (I forgot which one), that “in my days, we were so poor that we had to walk five miles to school…in barefeet, in the snow!”
Oh, sorry…I digressed.
So, what the heck are we going to do to maintain our sanity for one LOOOONG week?? Here’s what I came up with, a day-by-day activities, just some ideas for you “stumped” parents out there.
- Monday-wake up late (if you can) and ask your child to help you make breakfast ALL day. But be prepared to clean up after his/her mess.
- Tues-playdate at his/her friend’s house.
- Wednesday(the week is almost over)-take him/her to the local library for half a day, go home and make…LUNCH! By the time you’re done…it’ll be dinner time and then bed time *devilish grin*!
- Thursday-playdate at your house.
- Friday-TV day!!!Â
See that, the week will be over before you know it. And it’ll be time for school again, and the house will be too quiet for your liking…or NOT!
