Swimming lessons at the YMCA…for kids.
I went to register our sons (Tyler’s five and Trent’s three) for swimming class this morning at the local YMCA. It’s an eight week course starting next Monday (I’ll give you the “interesting” update afterward!).Â
It will definitely be interesting because Trent, eventhough he can bully Tyler any time, is afraid of strangers and anything that’s new. And I will be watching them through a glass door holding Sophia (our 11 months old feisty girl)!
I can envision what will happen next week already and it goes something like this:
5:00 PM–car ride to the Y, Tyler’s excited and Trent’s mumbling “scared scared”!
5:20 PM–check in at the front desk and a trip to the locker room to be changed (both boys will have their swimming trunks already on underneath their sweats from home…what do you think I am…NEW?)
5:30 PM–drop the boys off at the pool with the instructor. Tyler can’t wait to jump into the pool and Trent’s holding on to my leg, screaming on the top of his lungs “NO! NO!”
5:40 PM–Tyler’s swimming like a fish and loving it and Trent…still holding on to my leg with Sophia getting antsy in the stroller. If Sophia can talk, she would have told Trent to “get the heck in the water already!” Being the third child and surrounded by two older brothers, I can tell that she will be fearless and very feisty *eye rolling and sigh*.
5:45 PM–finally Trent lets go of my leg and inching toward the pool with a little bit of apprehension.Â
5:50 PM–Trent dipped his leg in the water, looking back to make sure Mommy and Sophia are still present.
5:55 PM–Trent’s other leg is in the water, still checking to see if Mommy and Sophia are still around.
6:00 PM– The instructor is in the middle of helping the first kid in line (there are six kids to one instructor)
6:10 PM– it’s almost Trent’s turn and the class…has ended.Â
WOW!! That was a very productive class, wouldn’t you say?!! I can’t wait for the second class already but I’ll be prepared with my bathing suit on so I won’t sweat as much being in the heated room with two children in tow!!

I took my almost 3 year old daughter to the ballet class and the swimming class at the creation center of our town last Fall. After that I decided no class for her untill she turns 4 ! You can tell what had happened
I think Trent’s behaviour could be applied for most of the kids at that age.
Anyway, happy swimming to your boys !
