The art of conversation…when you’re a kid!
If you are a parent, there is no doubt that you have many special moments in your life…and most of them involve your children. And one of those special moments for us is listening to our children converse or try to anyway with each other and with us.Â
We hope that these conversations wll continue when they grow up because communication is so important to any relationships (either between parents and children or siblings to siblings), don’t you agree?
Tyler (he’s five going on 40) was trying to negotiate his toy away from Trent (he’s three and still in the terrible two stage), and this was his conversation with Trent. All I can do is to listen in and chuckle.
Tyler “Trent, that’s my toy, you know!”
Trent “No, my toy!”
Tyler “Ok, you can play with it a little bit, but you can’t bring it to school. Do you understand me?”
Trent “No, my toy!”
Tyler “Ok, Trent. Don’t wreck it because I’m going to be angry with you, right Mommy?”
After having to pick up all the toys himself, Tyler was very frustrated and saidÂ
“Trent!! Learn to clean up!” Â
“Trent’s not cleaning up Mommy!! He’s not listening to the speaker!”
Mommy “Can you help him Tyler?”
Tyler “He has to learn to clean up Mommy!”
Tyler’s conversations with Mommy…
Tyler was using a straw for his milk and it’s not working so he gave it to me and I said “that’s stinky Tyler!”
Tyler said “it’s not stinky Mommy, it doesn’t smell! You’re silly Mommy, you’re always silly!” *LOL*
Mommy “Tyler? Do you want to listen to your music?”
Tyler “That’s ok Mommy, you can listen to your song!” *ahhh, how thoughtful!*
Mommy “Tyler, you have school tomorrow.”
Tyler “Yes, I know. I have school five days a week!” and he sounded exasperated that I didn’t know that fact!
Mommy “Tyler, do you know what you have to do after school?”
Tyler “Yes, my homework, and then eat dinner, play a little bit, bath, change my clothes, brush my teeth, read books, and night night. And then wake up, brush my teeth, make my bed, change my clothes, go downstairs for breakfast, play a little bit, lunch, and then school (he’s in a half day kindergarten).” (he’s “well trained”!)
I told Tyler to make his bed every morning and today was no exception and
Tyler said “you have to help me Mommy.” So I did it for him while he changed and then
he said “oh, I have to make my bed.” And he saw that I made it already and
Tyler said “you’re too good, Mommy!” Where does he get these things from…who else right?!
Well, I hope you have a way to record your own conversations with your children or their conversations with each other. It’s invaluable to say the least and it’ll bring many many smiles to your day, good or bad!Â
Happy conversing!!

At the dinner table
My 8 years old boy told me : “Mommy, I have a trick for you !”
My 3 years old girl stopped eating and had an upset look at her brother : “No, you can not do a trick to Mommy because she is so pretty !”
Of course , Mommy really enjoyed to hear it
My kids race their BMX bikes and my wee lad (6) is pretty hard on himself when he races badly (as opposed to simply losing) and is having to learn to control his mood until he’s well off the track. Something he had problems with on Saturday.
So, driving off to our Motel he asked for McDonalds (that scottish restaurant) for dinner.
Me: Why?
Him: To celebrate our good racing!
He did have the grace to look bashful as I laughed!
