My own book club!
I’m taking a break from bombarding you folks with information about pregnancy, parenting and babies and instead dabbing into a subject that’s very dear to my heart…books and reading!!
Having three rambunctious little rascals (under the age of five *hypnotized*) and writing this blog doesn’t give me an excuse not to read.
So any chance I get, I’m glued to a good book (that’s sitting on my throne if you must know…don’t give me that disgusted look, Al Bundy does it all the time! *innocent grin*)!! And only if it doesn’t interfere with (Mommy’s Primetime TV.).
But at the same time, I read to make sure that I don’t become (”Household Engineer’s job hazzard”!)!
I do have my own little book club like Oprah but it’s only missing a few million members. I’m always trying to recruit some more members outside of my…nieces, nephews and siblings!
So what kind of books do I like to read you ask? The “genre” (love that word) that I love to read is anything that has to do with the “Arthurian fantasy (King Arthur’s period not because that’s my husband’s name)” or other fantasy fiction relating to myths and legends and Dan Brown.
I try to stay away from anything that has the word “Notable or Literary award” on the cover. New York Times Bestseller is as far as I go for reference. Don’t get me wrong…I’m sure those are really prestigious awards but I think it might be dedicated for the smarties or people who belong to Mensa or something.
I did try to read a few just trying to expand my reading “repertoire” (just trying to show you that reading does help increase my vocabulary *proud grin*), and each time they sit on the shelf mid-read (that’s my term for “in a middle of excruciating reading and must stop, can’t finish!” and dust-collected.
I started this one book about Eucalyptus when my first son was born, it had some kind of European Literary (there’s that word again!) award on the cover, and five years later…it’s still in the toy landfill (a.k.a. the blackhole or our basement).
I tried to dab into the “spiritual” and “self-help” sections, but every time I do…I find myself in the land of Z’s with drools dripping down my shirt.
I’ve read the following books the past years (again…did I mention I have three kids?!) and loved some more than others, but they were still page-turners! I’ve been reading alot of the teen or young adults books lately. I figured that my kids, nieces and nephews will be reading these one day, so why not get a head start so that we can discuss it together, hence…my book club!!
- The Chronicles of Narnia…loved “the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” the most but the other six books were good too.
- Eragon & Eldest (Inheritance Books 1 & 2)…Christopher Paolini is a very talented young author. I sure learned alot of new words in his books. Eldest was a bit slow. Thruout the book, I wished he did away with one character. But the ending was a shocker! Can’t wait for the third book!
- Harry Potter series…this is one of a better series that I’ve read. The first one was the best but book 6, The Half-Blood Prince’s ending was a shocker.
- Inkheart…a bit slow but my niece really liked it!
- The Da Vinci Code…the BEST book I’ve read so far. Hopefully the movie will be as great as the book.
- Angels & Demons…second BEST after The Da Vinci Code. Not in a million years would I guess the ending of the book. Dan Brown is a genius, I think!!
- Digital Fortress…this one was entertaining to read.
- Deception Point…same goes for this one.
- The Crimson Petal and the White…this was a “mid-read”, somebody tells me the ending. It’s soooo sloooow!
I’m in search for another series to read. Any suggestions anyone? Next entry will be “book reviews on children’s books”.
Happy reading!

May I reccomend the Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde? It is light and fun, and easy pre-bed reading. I have a toddler and the only time I have to read is right before I go to sleep, so I always appreciate light-hearted literary romps. Fforde has a great sense of humor, and the jokes are pretty transparent (a good think in this situation). The first of the series is “The Eyre Affair.”
Let us know what you think about it if you read it.
