Score! Educational centers.
If you are a parent, there is no doubt that you’d want the best for your children. For us, education is one of those “best” that we strive to provide for our children.
We were ingrained as children that education will lead you to achieve anything you aspire to be. Our parents have sacrificed a great deal in order for us to achieve our goals and dreams. And we are indebted to them for all they’ve done!
With that said, I’ve attempted to teach my 5 year old son, Tyler, Reading and Math…but I find myself lacking the patience of those home schooling Moms/Dads and Tyler ends up getting frustrated and dislike learning.
It was time to find other alternative, something to stimulate his learning and at the same time, fun at learning! That’s a challenge I couldn’t overcome.
We’ve heard of Kumon from our nieces who’ve been with them for four years. But they’ve stopped going to Kumon because there’s a lot of memorizing. Now, that’s not using your “noggin” is it?!
It took some Googling to find Score! since they don’t do any advertisements, not that I’ve seen. Their website is http://www.escore.com/
Score! is a subsidiary of Kaplan, Inc. (you know, the test prep people) and the Washington Post Company. They have more than 160 centers in twelve states throughout the country. Their goal is to help children learn “not only just academic skills, but a lifelong love of learning.â€
After speaking and meeting with the Director, Amy, I immediately liked what they offer. If you live North of Boston, Massachusetts, the closest location is in Winchester. To receive a $50 off your registration, mention to Amy that you’ve read a review of Score! at Waya. Allow me to give a shout out to Amy, Rose and Ron over there. They are great at what they do, knowledgeable, friendly and very energetic!!
There are five different programs at Score!:
- Advantage Program, click here for more info http://www.escore.com/programs/advantage/index.php My nephew, who’s ten years old, enrolled in this program (at another location) for six months, but didn’t see any result so they opted to end their enrollment at Score! It’s hard to quantify the result with Writing, I think. This program wasn’t suitable for my nephew but that doesn’t mean that it won’t work for your child unless he/she gives it a try.
- Personal Academic Tutoring, click here for more info http://www.escore.com/programs/tutoring/index.php
- Early Learner, click here for more info http://www.escore.com/programs/earlylearning/index.php
- Study Skills Program, click here for more info http://www.escore.com/programs/studyskills/index.php
- Summer Programs, click here for more info http://www.escore.com/programs/summer/index.php
I am writing about the Early Learner program since Tyler has been enrolled in the program for six months now. With this program, you can visit the Score! center two hours per week, any day of your choosing. The centers are open on Saturdays as well.
At first, Tyler was apprehensive about going each week. But Score! offers an incentive, what they call Score! cards. Kids can save up the Score! cards for big prizes. And after each class, they get to throw some basketballs in the hoop and move their “climber” a few more steps to get closer to the summit. Once they reach the summit, they will move on to the next level and get a surprise. Who doesn’t like to be rewarded for a job well done, right?!
The class is equipped with the latest computer equipment and child friendly mouse where each student sits with headphones on to work on Reading or Math. And there are three instructors walking about in case if the kids have any questions.
As for Tyler, he didn’t like going at first but once he’s accumulated a bunch of Score! cards and got some prizes (plus lots of accolades from us)…his confidence level skyrocketed and actually likes it, believe it or not! He’s becoming more outgoing and not afraid to raise his hand when questions arise.
I’ve also asked to have extra Math worksheets so Tyler can practice at home on days that we don’t visit the Score! center. And he gets a book and flashcards once he’s finished a certain episode of Reading. The best part for Tyler is that once he’s done with the Math worksheets, he can pass them in for more Score! Cards.
I’ve seen great progress within six months. At first, I had to sit with him an hour each day when he does his worksheets at home. But eventually, he was able to finish the worksheets by himself and in 10 minutes or less. The whining and the fidgetting are still there, don’t get me wrong, but it’s less than when we first started.
Our philosophy is that, children will get used to the routine, it‘s like brushing their teeth or making their bed. If they were introduced to good work ethic at a young age, they will continue with that good habit (hopefully) into their adulthood. We are, afterall, a mirror image of our parents aren’t we?!
