“One of the greatest victories you can gain over someone is to beat him at politeness”

June 30th, 2006

Josh Billings must have known something about child rearing when he composed the quote above over a century ago. I am at an utter loss for words (and that’s rare!) when Trent, my 3 year old rascal, replies to all my questions with a polite “no thanks”.

Allow me to demonstrate my point.

Mommy “Trent, eat your dinner please.”

Trent, casually “No thanks!”

Mommy “Trent, can you pick up your toys please?!”

Trent, politely “No thanks!”

Mommy “Trent, it’s time for bed.”

Trent, pleasantly “No thanks!”

Holy CRAP Batman

June 28th, 2006

We live in the ‘burbs where there is no public sewer, but only septic systems. These septic systems are buried underground in the front or the back yard. It’s recommended that these septic systems are pumped every two years or depending on the number of occupants in your house. Translation: how much sh!t you and your family dump each day.

Why the heck am I telling you about this? Well, just in case you’re planning to move to the ‘burbs and have to deal with septic systems. See, I’m just looking out for you my fellow readers. And I thought I had it bad with all the poopy diapers I have to change and the poopy bums I have to wipe daily!!

“To err is human; to forgive, Divine”

June 26th, 2006

This quote from Alexander Pope reminds me of a story I read last month about a five year old girl, Kai Leigh Harriott. Kai was shot two years ago as she sat on her porch, an innocent bystander of a revenge went so wrong. The bullet left her paralyzed from the chest down and she is now confined to a wheelchair.

As she sat on the stand in court, facing her accuser, she spoke through stream of tears “What you done to me was wrong…but I still forgive him.” I was in tears myself after reading about Kai.

The Year of the Monkey in Viet Nam

June 23rd, 2006

I have always wanted to document my life growing up in Viet Nam for as long as I can remember. I figured my children will one day ask me where I came from and what Viet Nam was like. They are afterall half Vietnamese, and Korean the other half.

This blog gives me a chance to do so frankly. I’d love to share this part of my life with you. This will be broken into many “chapters” since it would be a very long post. I wouldn’t want to lose your interest in the middle of it.
