Beggars can’t be choosy, or can they
I received a phone call last night and thought it was a bit unbelievable so here I am posting it (you got to love the blogging world!)
If you’re like me, our phone numbers (home and mobile) had been listed on the “no call list from telemarketers” as soon as that was made available to everyone. But of course there are exceptions to that list. For instance, companies doing surveys and charitable organizations are exempt from this “no call list”.
Just like clockwork this week, we got a call from Organization X, asking for money to help our young children on drug education. That was fine and all, I’m all about being charitable when it comes to our youths. So I listened to the spiel and the guy was not very articulate and I do believe he was reading the script, which is fine but he was doing a really bad job at it.
But I was still listening and doing my “uh huh” until he comes to the end and asked “so will you be able to pledge a donation?” I replied “sure, I can do $10.”
People, we get at least 10 calls per month from organizations asking for donations on all sort of causes, and being the sucker charitable person that I am, I usually say “Ok, sign me up for $10!” So it all adds up, this is for those of you who might be spitting out the “cheapo” word at me.
The guy replied “oh, the pledge has increase this year to $20, can you do $20?” I replied patiently “I’m sorry but I do get a lot of these calls so they all add up, and with three kids and all.” I think he tuned me out after I said “I’m sorry”. But I was still expecting him to say “ok”. But NO people. He said to me “oh, that’s too bad. Maybe we can count you in for next year then?” And CLICK!
I was left holding the phone on one hand while the other hand trying to push my agape mouth back in its place. What just happened here? Somebody turned down my husband’s hard earned $10 big one?!!
I ran downstairs to tell my husband what just happened. I’m still in shock here. A charity organization is turning down money? Can they be choosy? I know they are not beggars but hullo? If they turn down my $10, can you imagine how many other $10 charitable suckers people out there?
Have you ever had the same experience? If you’re willing to offer your $10 to me…I’ll be happy to give you my address to send your hard earned money. That pays for a bag of diapers folks!

We’ve gotten that before. I just quit answering the phone. If you’re calling for donations should you really turn down any amount that someone is offering you? Kudos to you for donating, I personally ingnore the phone and save the moolah for our church and the Red Cross, oh and Saint Jude, because that commercial rips my heart out every time.
My theory is that they have to pay the telemarketer his $8 per hour and if he only gets one actual pledge per hour, they’re already down to $2 so they just ask for more right off the top. Doesn’t make it right, though. I always tell those people that it’s my policy to not conduct business over the phone and to send me something in the mail. I am sincere in that but they usually get annoyed and hang up on me, which totally reinforces my decision
Hey, thanks for stopping by and commenting. I can’t believe they actually turned down cash. Apparently they are doing fine and don’t really NEED it. They should probably stop calling, then.
I haven’t had anyone turn down my money because I just will not pledge anything over the phone. It seriously irritates me that, when I’m trying to get my kids to eat supper or into bed, that someone calls and asks for money. First of all, we don’t have that much. I have, on occasion, told the person working for whatever charity, that we actually qualify for their benefits. Not sure if we do or not, but that usually shuts them up. Anyway, we donate locally, to our church, the local food bank, etc. I’m wary of random people calling to ask for money for orgs I haven’t heard of, but sound similar to established orgs.
Thanks for stopping by my blog, and commenting. I’ve enjoyed yours so far!
Oh you are a sweetie-I usually cut them off pretty quick. Can’t believe they turned down $10.
have been getting alot of these calls lately, and I hate them!
