We’re baaack

We did it! We had our first mini honeymoon getaway in six years, there were lots of things that we did and saw, so this post will be a bit lengthy. I will break it down to different categories by dates and by places and this little dohickey (~) in order to keep your interest right here at my humble blog.

~~~~~~FRIDAY/Drop off our kids at sister’s house~~~~~~
That was difficult! The kids were so excited to stay over at their cousins’ house. They’ve been looking forward to this day ALL week. As much as I’m looking forward to our getaway, the thought of leaving them was disheartening. But realistically, I had nothing to worry about since my sister/husband have three older children of their own who will be keeping them company and helping them out. Let’s just say, there were tears shed, but not from the kids!!
~~~~~~Isaiah Jones Homestead Bed & Breakfast~~~~~~~~

Before we left, I wrote a post about my apprehension of staying at a B&B. To my dismay and horror, I deleted it by mistake on my hubbie’s CrackBerry, BlackBerry on Saturday morning while waiting (my Mommy’s internal clock is still ticking, I’m so used to getting up early with the three kids and it was 7AM for crying out loud!) for him to wake up from his peaceful slumber (I know, you can say I’m addicted to blogging and reading comments, I so need help!).

In my deleted (by mistake) post, I mentioned that I’m a chicken at heart and I get spooked easily. When I found out that we were staying at this 1849 antique B&B, the image of old squeaky haunted house comes to mind like this house. I even asked my hubbie if there are locks on the door to our room.

Well, I couldn’t have been more wrong and ignorant. We arrived at the B&B afer two hours of Friday Boston traffic, and was greeted by Richard Pratt, one of the Innkeepers, who went over the necessary housekeeping stuff. Here are some pictures of Isaiah Jones B&B, a member of Select Registry since 1989.

This was our charming room. It was immaculately clean with all the modern amenities like a big Jacuzzi bath tub (if you’re into bathing, that is). It was very cozy but I have to say that there was a musty smell to it due to the age of the house, no doubt.

My hubbie, I think he’s going on 73 or something, loves Sherry after dinner. A decanter of Sherry was presented on this table in the living room for the guests to enjoy. And the hubbie brought it (a glass of it not the decanter) back to the room and it wafted throughout the room which helped minimize the musty odor of the room.

See, there are locks to our bedroom door, all three of them. I was very relieved.

This was the dining room where breakfast is served from 8:30-9:30. There are two dining tables where you were joined by other house guests. My sister said that I’m not one to shy away from talking to strangers, including a cricket if it can talk back, but we were on our brief getaway and the thought of conversing with strangers was not something I was keen on. But honestly, we met some very nice and interesting folks from the weekend. So breaking bread with strangers was a great experience overall.

The breakfast consists of a three-course meal. Their homemade cranberry scone is to die for, they were sooo yummy, I wished I had more. Fresh sweet fruits were served next and then we had THE BEST French toast (I’ve never had it like that before) the first day. For the second day, we had this delicious concoction (my mouth was too stuffed to ask for the name) of crab meats, artichokes and sauce on top of an English muffin. Let me tell you, there was only crumbs left on the plate when we were done. Breakfast was served by Richard and his wife, Cecily Denson. I felt like a princess being pampered for once instead of “chew and screw” like we usually do dining out with the three kids. There were no crayons or plastic kiddie cups in sight!!!

Well, my perspective of staying at a B&B (for a romantic getaway and certainly not for young children) certainly changed. We really enjoyed the coziness of a smaller establishment (read: no running footsteps in the hall way or the many “dings” of the elevator doors). It was so nice to be pampered with delicious homemade breakfasts served to us daily on elegant China. If you’re looking for a nice romantic getaway, I’d recommend a B&B (check Select Registry for a reputable establishment) in a heart beat. And if you’re happen to be in the Sandwich, MA area…check out Isaiah Jones B&B. You won’t be disappointed.

~~~~~~”Crank”, Naked Oyster and Julie~~~~~~~
Are you still with me? I hope so because our romantic getaway has just started. This post is like a pupu platter, it has something for everyone (presumptuous of me to assume huh?!).
After being served a delicious breakfast at the B&B, we decided to drive to Hyannis, MA, a next town over from Sandwich, MA where we were staying, for some exciting things to do and see.
We visited the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum. I was fascinated by the Kennedys, especially with John John. But my interest diminished after John John passed away tragically. But since we were here at the summer home of the Kennedys, we did the touristic thing and visited the museum. For $5, you can’t pass that up. Check out the Kennedy family tree. Is your family tree this extensive?
We wanted to take a tour of Cape Cod Potato Chips (yeah, we’re educational like that), but they close on the weekends. What a bummer!! I was soooo looking forward to whiffing up some oil and receive a complimentary bag of potato chips.
After that failed attempt of the potato chips tour, we decided to do what we haven’t done together since Gladiator was on the big screen. Yup! We went to see a movie and the movie of choice? Crank! Trust me, there was nothing else worth seeing. We were in Hyannis, remember? I’m all for some mindless, a*s kicking movie. But let me tell you, my hubbie enjoyed the movie waaaay much more than I did! The Transporter was much better. Money was wasted but it was nice to see that the hubbie really enjoyed himself.
After getting all pumped up, testosterone wise from the movie (I don’t even know what that meant but just go with me here, it’s late), we were in the mood for some raw oysters. We saw Naked Oyster on the way to the potato chip factory and decided to give it a try.
After two orders of the freshest raw oysters at the bar (recreating our dating years), let me tell you…I wanted a whole boatload of them. I haven’t had raw oysters in like 4 years (this is like a trend with us, everything we do takes years, but it seems like every other year I was either pregnant or nursing, so I couln’t consume any raw stuff) and they were sooo good. We continued on with a seafood scampi and a side order of risotto (I know it sounds like a lot of food, but we actually shared these two dishes, we have to watch our figures you know). I’m drooling just thinking about it.
While sitting and enjoying our meals at the bar, we struck up a converastion with this cute patron, who turns out (you’ll never guess what she does for a living by looking at her) to be a firefighter in Middleboro, MA. And you know how I love firefighters. It was so fascinating talking to a firefighter and to get a female’s perspective was icing on a cake.
I promised her (and she agreed) that I would write about our meeting and to tell you single fellas out there that Julie is very nice (from our first meeting anyway), she can definitely haul your a*s out of any burning buildings while still looking great. So, if you are 5′9″, single and employed…she’s at the Middleboro, MA firehouse. But if you turn out to be some wackos, be prepared to be confronted by some very big and strong men at the firehouse. They are her protectors!!! Good luck Julie and keep up the great work you’re doing saving lives every day.
If you’re still with me, I thank you for humoring me by reading this long a*s post.
All in all, we had a wonderful relaxing time together for once. We couldn’t have asked for a nicer weekend. Thanks to my thoughtful hubbie for planning this whole event just for us and a big thanks to my sister and her family for taking care of our three adorable rugrats, whom we missed terribly! I’ll post more of our trip to a Sandwich beach later in the week, if I haven’t lost your interest already.
Sounds like you had a fabulous time! We stayed at a B&B in Colorado and in Brooklyn, Michigan. I’d highly recommend them if only for the “no fast food breakfast, someone else has to do the dishes” thing. ;)
Sounds like maybe you did a 180 on the whole B&B thing huh? I’m glad you enjoyed it. My wife and I love staying in them and even tried to buy one once not too long ago.
So… no handcuffs in the story?
Jeff - umm… We tried handcuffs and let’s just say…
Nah - are you kidding?! Her folks read this blog Jeff, so let’s try and keep it clean, will ya?! Betty is spooked so easily and when she saw the red walls when climbing the stairs - can you say “red rum”?! - I decided to keep everything simple and normal as possible.
But it was odd for me (as I’m always on the laptop) to complain to her to get off the !@#$ CrackBerry. Geez!
For those of you wondering about the handcuffs thing, read this post from sweatpantsmom, read the whole post and not just looking at the picture like Jeff did.
