My sisters-My best of friends

Love Thursday is upon us once again and I’m dedicating this post to my two sisters who are my best-est of friends.

This picture was taken last November when all 53 of us siblings, cousins, uncles, aunts and in-laws all gathered in San Jose for our uncle’s wedding. He finally settled down and found love at 50 years young to a lovely lady who is two years his junior.

The cute-as-a-button gal in the hot pink dress is my little sister and the one with the dreamy eyes in the traditional “ao dai” to the right is my oldest sister. I’m the awkward amazonian one in the middle holding my adorable Sophia who also adorned a mini “ao dai” (she was too busy playing with Mommy’s costume bling bling).

I’m the second of five, two sisters and two brothers. but the bond between us sisters are so much stronger than our brotherly bond. It just works out that way. Ever since we were little, us three girls would go every where together, we would have the same hairdos, wore the same clothes (when we were little and had no say in the matter), and also fought like cats and dogs. Our parents would punish us deservedly so. Afterwards, we would lick out wounds together, our sisterly bond was once again intact, and we would forget what we were fighting about in the first place.

We went our separate ways in college, but when everyone graduated…we would move back to our parents’ home (that was the traditional thing to do until you’re married) and stayed in the same room, shared the same bed, share the same clothes (not me, since I was the “big-boned” one out of the three) as if the last four years in college never happened.

When they got married and moved out of our parents’ house, it felt like my heart was cut into three. One for each sister as we went our separate ways, knowing painfully that this time…they have moved out permanently, leaving me behind. But it didn’t take long for us to pick up where we left of. They have moved out but not out of my life permanently, and that was comforting to know.

My sisters and I are like three peas in a pod, we can actually finish each other sentences sometimes. We tell each other every little secrets. We email each other up to 30 times a day, and chat T-Mobile to T-Mobile every single day, even though my little sister lives next store to us. We often joked that we might as well sell one of the houses and move in together, but then again…my brother-in-law and I would kill each other before the ink is dried on the paperwork. Yeah, it’s a love-hate relationship thing. He’s the hot water and I’m the hot oil.

There is nothing that I wouldn’t do for my sisters, as they will attest to that as well. When one of us girls gave birth, you can be sure that either one or both sisters would be there either in the delivering room or outside waiting anxiously. There is no shortage of help when we bring the baby home. Food would have been cooked, house would have been cleaned and other children would have been taken care of. We never had the need to ask for help, it was always assumed simply because we are sisters.

I leave you with this quote which describes what my sisters have meant to me all these 37 years, and I hope our sisterhood bond will be as strong as it’s been, until we are old and grey.

“A sister is a gift to the heart, a friend to the spirit, a golden thread to the meaning of life.” Isadora James

Oh man, you’re killing me with this amazing post, Betty! My wife and I have been talking about having a second child lately and tonight my MIL and I were discussing the unique bond among sisters. As much as I would love to have a son, I think it would be very special for the Peanut to have a younger sister. And after reading your post? I think I want her to have five!

Thanks. I’ll be sending the tuition bills to your house!

What a lovely post and you three look terrific in the photo. I’m so glad that I have my sister too, and she lives close enough that we can see each other a lot (and IM and call too, of course).

Although 20 years separates us, I’m very close to my two sisters, too. Closer (by a smidge) to my younger sister, because we grew up together, but my older sister is very much a part of my heart. Great picture; great post!

What a beautiful shot!

The height difference made me smile because when I’m with my two sisters I’m the awkward short one, as they both tower over me by 4-5″, leaving me to feel like the dumpy little sister even though they’re both younger than me. I, too, am left out of the clothes swapping. Sisterly connections are complicated and wonderful and you captured it well.

Really lovely. As an only child, I’m terribly terribly jealous. But very happy for you that you have such a bond in your life. Happy Love Thursday!

I have three sisters. And yet I’m still jealous of you. Relationships like this are so hard to find. And you have two! Beautiful, lucky women.

Growing up, I always wanted a sister. You are lucky to have 2, and to still be so close. I can only hope my girls will be that way also. They are 4 years apart, but I think that they will be close. All three of you are beautiful, and your daughter is so lovely as well. Thanks for sharing your family with us.

What a wonderful tribute to your relationship with your sisters. I have the same kind with my own sister. I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world!

That’s such a nice post. My wife has two sisters and they have a strange love-hate relationship going on. They have this silent language with each other that nobody gets.

You Gentle Readers are sooo kind! Thanks for all the nice comments/compliments.

For you folks who have daughters (I have one and would love to have another), you will see the sisterly bond grows stronger daily, but after the many spats, fightings, silent treatments, part of being siblings (from my own experience).

Awkward? Amazonian? Are you kidding me? All three of you are simply drop-dead gorgeous.

I love that you are all so close. I think I would have liked to have had a sister, so I’m glad that my girls have each other. I can only hope that they have a relationship like the ones you and your sisters have.

What a beautiful picture - all of you are beautiful! I think that having a sister is truly a gift. How wonderful that you have two. I hope they both are able to read this post. It’s beautifully written.

And thank you for the quote at the end. I love it.

That’s a beautiful picture. I’m with Mothergoosemouse, you and your sisters are ALL beautiful — and I would not call you big-boned or Amazonian.

I can’t wait to see if my girls develop a close bond. I loved having a brother as a child, but now that i’m older, I wish I had a sister.
