Do you REALLY want to know more about me
Kailani tagged me for this meme back in December and I’m just getting around doing this now, I’m efficient that way, I know. She’d like me to list 5 things that you don’t already know about me and all I have to ask is “do you REALLY want to know more about me?” Anyhoo, I had to rack my brains to come up with this list. So here goes.
- My first meal when I arrived in America via LAX (after spending 9 months in Indonesia as one of those boat people, aka refugees from Viet Nam) 26 years ago was a box of two pieces of KFC with a biscuit and everything. My family and I thought that THAT was the biggest meal ever and how weird it was. Who eats chicken without any rice to accompany it? Now you know my obsession with KFC. Tony and I can have an eating contest to see who can eat the most KFC. Although Pierre has been trying to “sell” us a bucket of spicy Popeye’s chicken, but Popeye is not popular around here. That’s too bad because I love spicy food, the spicier the better.
- I was in a fist fight with a boy, when I was twelve, trying to protect my seven year-old brother, who was being picked on by this punk. At 34, my brother still has to listen to that tale when we have family get togethers. And I’d do it again in a heart beat. Nobody touches my loved ones, nobody or I might have to open a can of whoopa*s on you!!
- Being a poor student and didn’t want to skip any dances (I’m needy that way!), I made my own gowns for Homecoming and Commencement dances (I also made my sister-in-law’s dress who was not my SIL at the time who went to the same college), and it turned out horrendous. I’m too embarrassed to post any pictures. Let’s just say that the front looked like I was wearing a bra outside my dress. It was too late to buy another dress and being a poor student (remember?), I had to wear it but still had fun with my friends.
- No more making dresses for me, but you can say that I’m pretty handy with the needle and thread. Ok, not to brag or anything (alright so I am!), but I’ve dabbled in knitting, crocheting (blankets for Project Linus), making curtains and duvet covers, and upholstery. Here are some items that I made. One of the reasons is that I’m
cheap frugal, and the other is that I don’t like to have the same thing everyone has, I’m snobby that way. Here’s Sophia sitting on a bench that I upholstered, trying to save a lousy $250 but it took me all my time (while being pregnant with Trent) and my sanity. This would have been my first and last time trying to upholster something.
Here are some artworks that I painted for Sophia and my nephew, don’t laugh at my feeble attempt at trying to be an artist.

If you’re a football fan, you’d know that Tom Brady is #12, but I changed it to #10 since my nephew was due in October, but the little guy decided to come out in November. So much for that effort.

5. I had a BS in Marketing and never thought I’d go into sales, but I was in corporate sales for nine years after college and loved it! believe it or not, I was somewhat shy and thought I would not be able to be successful at it. I did and sometimes miss it, but one look at my children and I don’t miss it THAT much!!

OMG! How adorable is Sophia? I love that outfit. Did you make that, too?
Sophia is gorgeous!! I love the artwork you made with her name!! I dont know how to sew, but thats something I plan to learn when I quit work LOL How well it works out is a whole other story!
5 reasons why I adore you.
And Sophia!! So cute it ought to be illegal.
I am so impressed over your craftiness. And frugality is way underrated.
Now I need to see that dress.
Love it! Upholstering? Wow. That’s quite an undertaking.
SOOO beautiful!
Is Sophie’s outfit something you made too? It looks like a traditional Korean wedding costume… fill us in!
Sophia is such a cutie! She looks like royalty! Good job with the upholstery. I bought a book once but never did get around to actually attempting it. Me too, I’d like to see that dress! Come on! Be brave!
Local girl and OTJ~ I’m not THAT talented, remember my disastrous attempt at making dresses? My MIL bought that Korean outfit for Sophia’s first year celebration, it’s a big deal for them I guess. She also wore that this past Halloween and one trick or treater asked if she was “Mulan”! Too funny.
KC & Mandy~Sorry but that infamous dress will be in the vault forever. Let your imaginations go wild ladies.
Get out - upholstering? I am so impressed. It’s beautiful.
And I love KFC, too but I have to agree with MetroDad - Popeyes is the BOMB.
Wow, you’re pretty talented!!! lol!
cute pics!
KFC eh? that’s a cute & memorable story.
First of all, you upholster things? Dude…people charge fat money for that and you just do it all by yourself. JEALOUS!!!
Second, I think it is so sweet that you made art for your kids. I made some little custom art pieces for my daughter’s room when she was younger but I used the computer.
Third, I knew that your adorable daughter was wearing a Korean dress when I saw it. My mom (may she rest in peace) was Korean so I grew up with things like that all around me. Is your husband Korean?
You are so creative! I can sew a bit, but mostly I’m good for emergency costume repairs.
Remind me never to get into a fist fight with you. I have very delicate hands.
I always wanted a little brother. I would’ve defended him too!
Sophia is beautiful. I love her dress and MAN am I impressed with the upholstery and artwork!
Oh I know what you mean, she tagged me and I ran like a coward. It’s hard coming up with things some days. But you’re pretty interesting. Hope you’re feeling good–have you posted about names you’re considering? I hope I didn’t miss any news in that area.
Mandy & KC~I’m a chicken and won’t be showing that infamous dress any time soon. Maybe for the right price?
Izzy~That’s the reason why this blogland is so awesome. I get to know all different people with very interesting background. Yes, my hubbie is Korean. And my MIL bought that dress for Sophia in Korea for her first year, as you know, it’s a big deal for 1st year celebration.
Tony~As long as you don’t touch my KFC, then you’ll be fine.
Michelle~I’ll be posting that next week. I hope we’ll get some interesting names.
I became obsessed with the first food we ate when we first arrived in the US as well. Ah, McDonald’s…I remember my first Big Mac so fondly, it looked HUGE in my four year old hands. And ketchup…oh my god, it’s the American nuoc mam!
PS The upholstery and art look fab and your baby really IS super cute.
NOW I understand your obesession with KFC! All is forgiven (but I still swear by Popeyes any day of the week.)
Oh. My. God. You upholster?? And here I thought I was something special because I made a couple of quilts way back when. You rock, Betty!
I’m finally catching up with you after moving. What a cutie and great painting, I love the butterfly and ladybug! Sophia is such a princess!
