Telemarketers phone etiquette 101
I’m not exactly Ms. Manners (although I might annoyingly come across as one, alright I’ll admit it!) but when I’m on the phone with someone, I try not to chew and talk at the same time, except for talking to my sisters maybe. On the other hand, I might be picking my nose but who would know that through the phone?!
I received a phone call from a telemarketer for a charity organization this morning (even if you’re on the “Do Not Call List”, non-profit organizations are exempt) and the the guy was chewing something really crunchy that I can hear him loud and clear. He asked for me and I annoyingly told him to finish chewing and call me back later. And he said sheepishly “ok”.
How about this scenario, when these same non-profit telemarketers call you but they kept on talking with their co-workers even when you already answered the phone?! To me, that deserves an automatic hang up.
Uh, hello. Is it me or is it just simple etiquette? I mean if you’re dialing-for-dollar, shouldn’t you be a bit more courteous and possess some form of manners?
It must be me, I’m on a short fuse these days, maybe it’s the school vacation week (it’s only the 2nd day by the way) and the kids have been home and they have been driving me bonkers. Oh, did I say that out loud?
My daily nap time (hey, if your 23 months daughter is napping and you’re 6 months preggo…why not?!) has been compromised with two active boys wanting to know “what’s next Mommy?” “Can we do this Mommy?” “Mommy, where are you?” “MOMMYYY, TRENT’S HITTING ME!” “MOMMYYY, TYLER’S NOT SHARING!” And that was only 9:30 AM this morning folks!! Something to look forward to when school ends on 6/25. Yippee!!
The most understanding hubbie thinks I need a break. So he’s taking a day off this Friday to take the three kids to the Museum of Science. But I just can’t seem to go and relax somewhere knowing that there are a few errands (like groceries shopping, birthday gifts to be purchased, cook for the weekend, etc…) that have to be done without the kids. I know, I should learn to “relax” a bit before this baby arrives in June.
If you have a day off just by yourself, what would you be doing?

Read in bed, see a chick flick, get my eyebrows waxed, take a dance class. Enjoy your day!
Oh man! I hear you about the rudeness with people on the phone. I work in a call center and people call me all the time eating and coughing right into the phone, it’s soooo annoying and rude.
As for what I would do with a day alone? read, nap, and watch a girlie movie. you need to relax dear Betty! And I understand about the kids driving you nutty with the fighting. Mine do that too and it’s enough to piss off the Good Humor man~~~that’s Chad’s saying!
I hope you get some must deserved rest on Friday and don’t run yourself ragged.
What’s this “day off” you speak of?
This concept is so foreign to me that I’d probably waste the whole day trying to figure out how to use it.
I didn’t know non-profits were exempt from “do not call”. No wonder they keep calling. What gets me is when they call you 10 times a day and never leave a message.
A full, guilt-free day off? ALLLLL day in bed with good books and tea and cookies.
I can’t stand the calls asking for money. If anything, it makes me place that organization on my mental list of “do not donate.” Because they’re taking my time up with the call, and then they want me to spend money too.
I’m with Jeff…what is this free time you speak of?
Lol, I agree with you on the etiquette. The other 1 that bothers me a lot is smoking while talking on the phone. I have to make phone calls to clients quite often & to hear them smoking on the other end drives me bonkers.
Take the day off on friday, errands will still be there on saturday. Just relax & enjoy the day without kids!
I really hate telemarketing calls…
I have a hard time when kids who can’t answer a phone properly pick up. How many times have I asked for their mother only to have them lay the phone down and abandon me? Maddening.
If I had a day-off, I would sleep all day.
BTW- I can tell when anybody is picking their nose while talking on the phone. It’s a gift.
My day off would start by picking my nose. Because if you cannot smell the flowers, why stop?
HBM~ Is there such thing as a “guilt-free” day off when you’re a Mom? That must be an oxymoron, right?!
My ex-BF used to call while he was using the toilet. I would hang up on him because I thought it was so disgusting.
Day off? Read the paper in bed and walk the dog on the beach. But with no kids, I get days off every weekend.
The Do Not Call Registry has become my secret weapon. As soon as I can tell it’s a telemarketer on the other end I calmly ask the full name of the organization and then say, “Thank you. I’m on the Do Not Call Registry and I’ll be filing a complaint with your name on it.”
It amuses me to hear them apologize profusely and then hang up before I can ask them any more questions.
I’d blog. Read. Answer my journal. Create my scrapbook. Cross stitch. That’s what I want to do. I’d probably end up watchign tv though.
