Weekend recap
This is my first “weekend recap” simply because I have “fart brain”, nothing but gas…silent but deadly gas. So, let me present to you what we did over the weekend.
As some of you know that I live to eat, and the same goes with the rest of my family. We plan our weekend menu on WEDNESDAY and which house our extended troop will congregate to, and plans will only change if one or two families have prior engagements with friends. I know, the nerve!
For Saturday, we gathered at our brother’s house for “beef roll up” (that’s our made-up name, but if you frequent any Vietnamese restaurant, this is part of a “Bo Bay Mon” dish, which means literally “Seven-Course Beef”, but for us, we only eat one part of the seven course meal).
When the table is set, everyone knows their drill…you grill your own meat, but we also added shrimp, or squid in butter (this is definitely not for the health conscious folks), wrap them in rice paper, along with vermicelli noodles, red leaf lettuce, cucumber, bean sprout and assorted Asian leaves (that’s the only word I can come up for mint leaves, cilantro, and other leaves that I don’t know the actual English translation).
It takes some practice to wrap everything up like a burrito, everyone has their own version. Mine usually comes out fat, just the way I like it. And you dip the roll in this sauce. It might be an acquired taste since the smell can be offensive to some palate. But this dish would not be complete without it. I know, sounds appetizing huh? And my sister can make the meanest sauce along with my Dad.
After adjusting my elastic maternity pants, I was ready to forge ahead for some more roll-ups. I think we spent a good two hours just sitting around eating and talking, while the kids (all nine) were playing by themselves nicely, most of the time. I needed a crane to lift me off the chair after the 17th roll (my hubbie gave in after 5, he’s watching his figure). Hey, I’m eating for two here, 12 for me and 5 for the baby. Plus, I think I see the chocolate cake coming out of the fridge, have to save some room for it.
Mind you, we also had brunch prior to this feast with each person bringing a dish. Didn’t I tell you we love to eat?! So, tell me internet friends, what do you usually feast on for the weekend? Hmm, I wonder what we’re eating this coming weekend.

OMG! 17???? You’re going to give birth to a 20 lb. baby! LOL!
being married to a filipina usually means 5-7 meals per day on the weekend and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that 100 percent of the time for each meal RICE will be eaten
Weekends are all about the comfort foods…dim sum, steaks, pasta, sushi, and pastries. Mmm.
Mmmm… sounds good, especially the shirmp & squid in BUTTER!!!
Nah, we don’t veer off of our regular food on the weekends.
Ditto on the dim sum. And if we can swing it with babysitting, margaritas and grilled skirt steak…
Now, I’m drooling.
weekends are about easy-to-cook (aka microwave), take-outs, China town and Korean restaurants.
Man, your family traditions are to die for! If I lived near by I would so crash one of your family gatherings.
I love a good family get together– wish I had room for 17 rollups, but I’m trying to lose the weight from baby No. 3!
Which course does the KFC fit into?
Sounds like you have some great family weekends.
The only thing we do different on the weekends is that sometimes my hubby cooks instead of me.
YUMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE these rolls! I ususally get grilled pork, OK my mouth is watering! Tell me again the name of the restaurant you goto in SD, I gotta get overthere now!
Amanda and if anyone who’s in SD~We had the best Vietnamese food at Saigon at 4455 El Cajon Blvd, the spring rolls were the size of my 2 y/o’s legs. It’s that huge and oh so yummy!! I’m drooling now thinking about it!
