March madness, Horton, and other stuff

I’ve started this post last week when it was still March and now it’s April. So many projects…so little time. Please excuse the mumble jumble!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
No, I’m not referring to the March Madness as in the NCAA Tournament that’s going on right now. I haven’t been a fan of basketball since the awesome ’80s with Larry Bird, Tiny Archibald etc…, although I should get on the band wagon since the Celtics are doing great this season. That’s the kind of sports fan I am.
Surgeries and hospitals
March has been a crazy month around here. Parker underwent a minor surgery a week ago to remove a cyst on his bottom lip. We noticed it since he was born, but it got bigger and bigger so finally after consulting the specialist, we had it removed.
The decision was hard to make since he’s only 9 months old. But it all comes down to insurance, it’s sad to say. My hubbie’s employer was gulped up by a bigger fish, and the new insurance would have been more expensive by April 1st. We thought that being employed by a bigger company, health/dental might be better but with this company…it only benefits singles or people on the way out, as in 6 feet under. The more kids you have, the more expensive the policy is, so we went from paying around $250/month before to almost tripling that. But get this, after your 7th kid (yeah you read it correctly)…you’ll get a break. Uh, no thanks!
I know, I shouldn’t complain, at least we get health insurance but really after paying taxes and health insurance…there’s only so much you can squeeze from the paycheck.
Anyway, getting back to Parker and his surgery. It was harder on us parents than the kids. He was such a trooper at 9 months old! He smiled up until when the doctor took him away for surgery. The surgery lasted only 45 minutes but it was the longest 45 minutes of my life! We spent time in the recovery room with Parker for another 1.5 hours and he recovered at home after that.
Here’s to not having to be at a hospital any time soon. It seems like we’ve been to hospitals too many times this past year. The last time was on January 22nd when my sister had a seizure as a result of the brain surgery. Thank goodness her husband was home to administer CPR on her, otherwise I can’t imagine the other possibility.
My awesome Mom has been driving by to take my sister out (she can’t drive until July) even if it’s just for 2 hours. My sister has been keeping herself busy with house chores, putting overdue pictures in albums, things that we don’t have time for and now she has all the time in world. She said she has to do it slowly so that she can stretch it out for the day after. I can’t imagine being homebound, we rely on our cars for everything living in the ‘burbs.
Let me talk about something else before I start bawling thinking about her situation.
As I mentioned before regarding our soon-to-be new insurance in April, I had my own minor surgery as well. For some unknown reason, I’ve been getting these sun spots on my face. When I was in my 20’s (yeah, that’s only a few years ago!), I worshiped the sun, lying out foolishly to tan any chance I get. And now, I’m paying for it dearly! I’ve been so scare of the sun when I got my first sun spot 5 years ago on my left cheek, so now when I go to the beach or just outside…I have on a sombrero big enough to land a helicopter on, and sun tan lotion SPF 150.
I had the sun spot removed on my right cheek just as a precaution, just making sure it’s not skin cancer. It was quick and painless, I was done in an hour. I look like Scarface but with 3-4 applications of Mederma for 8 weeks, you wouldn’t even notice any scarring at all. Let’s hope there won’t be any more spots any time soon. So kids, listen to your Mom and stay out of the sun!
Birthdays and more birthdays
We celebrated 3 birthdays in March! I know at least 9 other people whose birthdays are in March and they are all females! We joked that most if not all of these women/girls have very strong personalities, they are very particular and anal, not that it’s a bad trait or anything. Take my next store sister for instance, she is the definition of anal and so is her oldest daughter, also a March girl. AND my husband’s sister, THAT deserves a separate post but I can’t air my dirty laundry on this blog unfortunately. I might have to go “underground”. ;-)
Do you know anyone with a March birthday? Are we correct in our generalization?
Date with Dr. Seuss
This past Sunday, Tyler and I met up with my sisters and their kids to see “Horton Hears a Who”. I loved every minute and recommend it highly! This is one of the better adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ books. It’s not dark and gloomy with adult humor like the other kids’ movies. It’s whimsical, fun and very inspirational. I even shed a few tears and was not at all embarrassed to join in with the rest of the audience to clap at the end of the movie. This is definitely a movie to own!
So kids, a person’s a person no matter how small!
“Focus
Last but not least, I’d like to leave you with this advice from my 3 year old going on 40 little girl. Last night after dinner, we were still in the kitchen while Tyler practiced his piano and he was not paying attention, Sophia ceased what she was doing and said “FOCUS!”. My hubbie and I stared at each other in disbelief and after we dusted ourselves of from rolling on the floor laughing…we asked “Sophia, do you know what ‘focus’ means?” She shrugged her shoulders and went on her way.
We’re just amazed that she knew that word at all and to use it at the right time too. Uh, I supposed she is a sponge after all, truly my “mini-me”! Scary, I know!!
Happy spring! I’m so glad it’s April finally! Can we not see any more specks of snow on the ground until next winter?!
Wow. Lots going on at your house. Glad Parker’s surgery went well. Poo for the icky insurance. It is getting ridiculous the cost of things these days.
My sister-in-law is a March baby and she is not anal at all…
My hubby took the kids to that movie but I haven’t seen it.
Sophie sounds like a character…I wonder who the boss is there?
Wow, I’m glad that everyone is recovering already at your house!
It’s good to have an extra piano coach on hand - Sophia is already at work.
That was fun. Kind of like getting a month’s worth of posts all rolled into one. Very economical!
I’m glad everyone is doing well after all the surgeries. We had to have a cist removed from my son’s ear when he was about 1 year old, so I know exactly what you went through.
One thing though… you’d better get busy if you’re going to get that 7th kid insurance break!
I’m glad to hear you enjoyed Horton. I’ve been hearing mixed reviews so I wasn’t sure if we should see it.
I’m so glad things turn out well for both. I can’t believe she’s still going thru hard time, she doesn’t deserve any of this. Let her know we’re all praying for her well being.
Wow - so sorry to hear you’re going through such stressful times. But glad to hear that your sister and your son’s surgeries went smoothly.
No March birthdays here - but lots in April. I’m up to my ears in bday celebrations plans…
