My Locks of Love
After reading about Ann Curry donating her hair to Locks of Love (LOL), I’ve decided to post about it on 8/20/2006 and took one step further to join her in growing out my hair for this great cause. I did have some concerns about LOL after doing some research on the net (in my last post), but if Oprah stands behind LOL, then it’s certainly good enough for me.
Every time I see children who lost their hair due to terminal diseases, it just breaks my heart and I’m so glad I’m able to do my part, no matter how small. Almost two years later, I’m happy to say that I have my own 10 inches of locks to donate as well.
My sister came along to capture these pictures of yours truly before the cut.
It was sort of bittersweet having my long hair cut off after these years. But let me tell you, I felt like I’ve lost 10 pounds (wishful thinking, I know!) and 10 years younger (com’on, play along with me here!).
I came home and Tyler said “I like your long hair better Mommy!”. Oh well, can’t please them all but after I explained to him that I’m donating my hair to children who lost theirs, he changed his tune.
The next time you decide to cut off your long hair and don’t know what to do with the remaining hair, why not check out Locks of Love and donate it. Personally, it’s a rewarding feeling knowing you took part (no matter how small) in putting a smile on a child who’s going through a devastating disease.

On a side note, we’re hoping you can say a prayer for my oldest sister who’s undergoing a “stem cell transplant” next Tueday for three weeks. We are hoping that this procedure will permanently rid her body of all cancer cells. It’ll be a very long process but she is one tough fighter and she certainly has a lot of people who love her tremendously.
We went to her house this past Sunday to celebrate her birthday 31 days in advance (since she’ll be at home recovering and visitors are not allowed due to risks of infection to her), and we had a great time as always.
As we were in the car driving home, Tyler said to me “I’m crying because I miss auntie, she’ll be in the hospital”. Trent heard that and he started bawling while saying “I miss auntie.” For the whole ride home, I was in between the boys trying to comfort them while holding back my own tears.
They finally stopped crying when I told them that their three cousins will be staying with us in the interim while auntie is in the hospital. They are more like siblings than cousins. The oldest cousin R. is 14, E. is 11 and M. just turned 9.
It’s heartbreaking to see them dealing with their Mom’s cancer at such young ages. But thank goodness for my parents, especially my Mom, who has retired since last year. She’s been driving over to take my sister places, hang out with her, and take care of the kids. She is definitely a precious jewel!!
When we arrived home, this email was sent from my sister and this time…I couldn’t hold back the tears. She’s one selfless, kind-hearted and extra special person!!

Dear Family,
I am so happy that you all came to our house to be with us today. Thank you for the birthday cake and tell the kids I love all the get well cards that they made for me before I am heading to the hospital and will bring to my hospital room as well. I am very emotional and lucky to have such caring and wonderful family who loves me a lot and would do everything for me and own my family.
My “early 41th” birthday is very special because I was able to celebrate with my whole family. I could go on and on but there is not enough room or time to tell you know that I love you all very much.
Anyway, hope everyone enjoyed the food and the companies tonight..I DID:) but too bad Mom and Dad were not able to eat dinner with us but we were thinking of you both.
Love
T.

Happy Birthday and good luck to your sister!
Where’s the after photo of your hair??
Wishing your sister all the best!
That’s great that you made a hair donation! One of my dancers has beautiful thick hair that grows so fast - she’s already made two separate donations already.
First of all, my thoughts are with your whole family while your sister undergoes this treatment. I hope she feels better very soon.
And second, how cool are you to donate your hair to locks of love? That is great! I would like to see an after picture though. LOL is a great organization for sure!!!!
Happy Happy Birthday to your sister…..
And many many more….
Thinking of her and your entire family as you all help in the battle against cancer…
A wonderful, wonderful family you have Betty!
She’s in my prayers. I lost a dear friend to cancer so she is definitely in my prayers.
Sending prayers, thoughts, and good voodoo to your sister….
