Antiques Roadshow

I was channel surfing last night, since there was nothing to watch, and stumbled on Antiques Roadshow. I told the hubbie that my new “job”, besides from being a “household engineer”, is to be a “professional shopper” at…yard sale, that is!

Have you ever watched Antiques Roadshow? The premise of the show is this: Professional appraisers, from jewelries to furnitures to the oddities, travel to six different states per year and hold appraisal events at a specific location (determined the year before). Ordinary folks like you and me can bring in your “find” and the appraiser will determine the “actual” worth of the item.

Last night, there were a few treasures that knocked me off my couch. This one guy brought in a chair that he purchased the same day at a yard sale for $2. It turned out to be one of a kind antique (I forgot the make) chair, the actual worth of the chair was around $10,000. That’s a 1 with 4 zeroes!!!

There was one other guy who brought in something that he thought was a tea kettle that looked like Japanese-made, and he owned it for 30 years, and bought for $10. It was appraised for $15,000!!

The appraiser said it’s better than playing the stock market. And if you had the courage to check your 401K plan recently, you’d know it took a huge dive. I almost threw up when I saw mine. It’s even worse when there’s no income to add to my 401K when you’re a “professional Mom”. I guess I’m going to have to find a sugar daddy to support me when I’m old and gray.

So, I’ve decided to browsing the yard sale from now on to find these great finds. Wish me luck!!

Tell me, have you gotten any great finds in the past that you’ve gotten for a cheap price?

I’m not looking at my 401k either! I’m not much of an antiques shopper, so I’ll just admire those people who make great finds.

Good to hear from you - I totally understand the busy-ness.

I keep commenting and my comment gets eaten!

Anyway, no I have never gotten a really good deal on anything I have bought at a yard sale. Damn! I do love Antiques Roadshow though! And I don’t have a 401k, so I’m good. . .
